Environment Minister Terry Lake is downplaying environmental concerns over the liquid natural gas industry.

Lake says the government is still committed to a 33 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, the same year it hopes to see five L-N-G plants in operation.

"So yeah I remain optimistic i think it's been shown that British Columbia is good at doing this kind of stuff, we will work towards those targets and of course I think we've got a lot of time to work with industry, develop models that will mitigate the greenhouse gases that are produced in this process."

The government has already said natural gas used to generate power for L-N-G plants will be considered a "clean energy", but it's not clear how that will affect the emissions targets.
