The US Ambassador to Canada is ruling out the idea of opening up the bordes to allow Canadians and Americans to cross freely.
Talking questions from students at Simon Fraser University, David Jacobson says yes, borders are crossed freely in the European Union, but it involves each country needing to partially surrender its sovereignty to allow for travel across those borders.
Jacobson says he can't see the US or Canada as being willing to do that.
However, he says the two countries are dependent on each other and says the States could learn from Canada, as far as the banking and health care systems go.
He says the two also need to cooperate on the disputed northwest passage shipping route.
