It happened on Saturday but we are just now learning of a spill at Suncor Energy's terminal on Burrard inlet.

Suncor spokesperson Sneh Seetal says it was a soy based bio-diesel that leaked out.

"The leak was occuring from one of our storage tanks located on site. We activated our response immediately and we notified the appropriate regulatory authorities. At this time it is believed that approximately 225 barrels of renewable diesel leaked from the tank onto the property."

Seetal says a small amount of diesel did leak into Burrard inlet.

"We believe that a very small amount may have reached the waters of Burrard inlet. Not withstanding any release of product that is not intended to be released is unacceptable to us. So we have engaged Western Canada Marine Response corporation and they are assisting us with the clean up efforts."

Seetal says the leaking container was isolated and oil booms deployed on the water.

"We drained the tank. We trenched around the tank to collect the material so we could dispose of it and we transferred any remaining product from that storage tank to a different tank on our facilities. We have engaged Western Canada Marine Response corporation they are assisting with the clean up."

Of the "small amount" of diesel out of the 225 barrels that ended up in Burrard inlet, the Port of Metro Vancouver says 250 milliliters has been recovered from the water.
