Surrey Mayor unhappy with Liberal referendum idea

The BC Liberals' idea of holding a referendum on transit funding is not sitting well with Surrey's mayor.

The referendum would not happen until November 2014's municipal election.

This delay in a solution for people south of the Fraser is not OK with Dianne Watts.

"We've got to put that infrastructure in.  So to put it off for a couple of years until they have a municipal election I don't  know if that is prudent, because we have been dealing with this for many, many years."

Watts says it is unfair to put her area's transportation needs to a vote when the same was not done in the past.

"Whether it is the Evergreen Line, Westcoast  Express, the Canada Line, the Millennium Line, it's all been paid for.  Now I can pretty much guarantee that the residents in those communities are not going to want to put up dollars to pay for infrastructure south of the Fraser.  What we are saying is that all of the residents south of the Fraser have absolutely paid for all of that infrastructure, I think in the tune of 144 million dollars a year. "

The idea of a referendum is part of the BC Liberals' election platform released today.
