A university criminologist says the RCMP's decision to release the names of known gangsters in Surrey will do nothing to curb the problem of gang violence.
Rob Gordon with Simon Fraser University says the solution is one many don't want to hear.
He says such a list would not "out" gang associates because their family and friends are likely already aware of their involvement.
Gordon says drug use isn't going anywhere either, so he suggests decriminalizing some illegal substances.
“If we move to a system of regulation and taxation and away from prohibition and the wasteful use of criminal justice resources to try and achieve the impossible, then we're going to be making some headway.”
The RCMP announced the move after a fatal shooting outside a shopping centre in South Surrey last night.
