It's a day held with the hope that work-related deaths will be eliminated.

The Day of Mourning was marked in Vancouver Friday with a gathering at Jack Poole Plaza.

The chair of WorkSafe BC's Board of Directors says this past year has been a difficult one...

"With the tragic explosions at the Babine and Lakeland sawmills, killing four workers and injuring more than 40 others," says George Morfitt.

Morfitt says 149 workers died in this province last year.

Meanwhile, Jim Sinclair with the BC Federation of Labour says it's a worldwide problem.

"More than two million people a year die on the job around the world."

Sinclair adds almost every one of those deaths is preventable.
