This week is North America Occupational Safety and Health week, and BC's event tomorrow includes demonstrations from fire fighters and marine rescuers, among others.
Organizer Tanya Steele says while there has been progress in workplace safety with regard to physical trauma injuries, there's still more that can be done.
"Asbestos, silica, sort of exposures have gone up, so we're still losing workers to that. Ten years ago or 20 years ago, people didn't have PPE or respirators to put on, so we're seeing an increase in that but what we're controlling now, we're seeing an absolute decline in these stats because people are thinking about safety and having a culture of that at their job sites."
Wayne Gretzky's dad Walter, who lost his hearing during a workplace accident, is the keynote speaker at this year's event, which starts at 11:30 in the morning at Shipbuilders Square.
