Liberals buy ad to promote Greens in Victoria newspaper

There’s an unusual election ad in the Victoria Times-Colonist newspaper today.

It's bought and paid for by the BC Liberal Party, but it promotes Green Party Leader Jane Sterk as a better choice than the NDP.

Adrian Dix was asked if this is an obvious attempt by the Liberals to split the NDP vote in a couple of key Victoria-area ridings.

"If it is an attempt, like a lot of things the Liberals do, it's not a very successful one. I mean, this is a lovely ad. I guess they didn't use the same agencies they spent taxpayers' money on, I don't know. The reality is that people know if they want a change for the better in British Columbia, they have to vote NDP."

Sterk is running against NDP veteran Carole James in Victoria-Beacon Hill, while climate scientist Andrew Weaver is running a strong campaign in Oak Bay-Gordon Head.

Sterk says she was surprised.

"I think it is an interesting strategy politically. I assume there is some belief it is going to persuade people to vote for the Liberals or to have that move the NDP votes to the Green party so the Liberal candidate can win."

Sterk isn't sure the strategy will work.
