A UBC study says the worlds sharks are a better net economic benefit int he ocean rather than in soup.
University Fisheries Centre Professor Rashid Sumaila says the value of global shark fisheries is worth 630-million dollars and on the decline, "On the other hand, when you look at shark watching, it is a rising and increasing business. More and more people are going out to just watch the sharks and enjoy that and pay to do that. We did the calculation and with time, we are going to get more dollars coming from shark watching than from catching them and then finning them."
The study says there are 600-thousand people shark watching every year which generates revenue, and some 10-thousand jobs.
Shark fin soup is a controversial Asian delicacy.
