Authorities in other cities may question the benefits of safe injection sites, but Vancouver police have no doubt about them.

"It has saved lives. It has minimized the impact of these individuals possibly on the neighbourhood."

Earlier today, the federal Conservatives tabled plans to require would-be safe-injection clinic operators to first seek input from the community, as well as support from municipal and provincial governments.

Sgt. Randy Fincham says it's not clear if Vancouver needs another Insite clinic.

"It’s to be determined. It's something that you would have to look at the need for expanding that facility. It's something that would be very closely looked at by both the police department and the City of Vancouver. It's too early to tell at this point."

The current clinic in the Downtown Eastside is nearly 10 years old. The federal government fought its existence all the way to Canada’s highest court, which ruled in favour of keeping Insite open.
