The West Vancouver Police, community and schools are holding a meeting to discuss the safety of longboarding.

In the last couple of weeks, more than a few teens have been seriously injured in longboarding crashes in the Lower Mainland.

"It's a concern almost anywhere where there is a sloped road and anyone who has access to the sloped road who likes the sport of longboarding," says Const. Jeff Palmer.

"The size imbalance is so dramatic between a human on a longboard and most motor vehicles, so definitely the longboarder is the most vulnerable participant in any collision."

Palmer says his main message is consider where you are doing it and that protective equipment is mainly meant to protect them from the pavement, not from cars.

He says police received more than 100 longboarding complaints last year. The acitivty is banned on West Vancouver streets.

The meeting will be held June 26 at Kay Meek Studio Theatre. Pre-registration is requested.
