Councillors concerned about traffic flow at possible viaduct removal

Vancouver city staff have laid out a proposal to remove the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts.

One of the main concerns councillors have is about traffic: Would it be pushed into other neighbourhoods? Will commercial traffic continue to flow smoothly?

The city’s director of transportation says traffic volumes are consistently easing.

Staff are also looking at using streets such as National or Malkin to divert traffic from Clark to Main street to keep things moving.

So far, $3.5 million has been spent on research for the report on viaducts on proposal.

Director of planning Brian Jackson says that's unusual, but so is the project.

Council will hear from speakers on this proposal tomorrow afternoon.

Construction is slated to happen in 2017 at the earliest.
