Belt-tightening in Liberal budget

There will be more belt tightening across the provincial government as the Liberals try to balance the budget.

The new budget tabled today has very few differences from the February budget, except lower revenue projections due to a worsening economy with sluggish growth in housing starts, employment and retail sales.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong says the government must find 30 million dollars in savings to reach a slightly lower surplus forecast of 153 million.

"The next 12 to 18 months are gonna be tough, they're gonna be tough, but the prospects, the medium and long term prospects based on getting the fundamentals right maintaining our discipline for every province and every region of the province I think are exceptionally good."

The government is also selling assets, 58 million dollars worth of properties so far, with nine other properties still up for grabs worth an estimated 86 million.

Demands for more money for education have not been heard.

De Jong says the government will try to reach a ten year deal with the BC Teachers' Federation without spending new money.
