Since BC brought in the toughest drinking and driving laws in the country -- the province says the death toll from driving under the influence has been cut in half.

Provincial numbers from the first 30 months under the new rules show an average 56 drunk driving deaths each year -- that is down an average of 114 before the program.

Still the numbers also show a lot of people are still getting behind the wheel when they shouldn't.

Between January and April this year, police gave 5,600 people immediate roadside prohibitions - including nearly 3,900 whose blood alcohol levels were over .08.
