A man and woman are facing terrorism charges after explosives, similar to those used in the Boston Marathon bombing, were left at the B.C. Legislature.
RCMP say John Stewart Nuttall and Amanda Marie Korody face charges of knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity, possession of an explosive substance and conspiring to commit an indictable offence.
Mounties accuse them of trying to place an explosive device at the BC Legislature on Canada to “cause death or serious injury.”
They say they were inspired by Al-Qaeda ideology.
The investigation started back in February 2013 after the RCMP got information from CSIS.
Mounties say there was never any threat to the public, and they were able to disrupt the planned attack.
Saying members of the BC Legislature will not 'let suspicion darken our hearts,' Premier Christy Clark was quick to respond to today's revelations from the RCMP.
"Instead, we will remain open-hearted, depending on one another, trusting in one another and we will not be seized by anger. Instead, we will continue to look to the future of this great province with open hearts and with optimism."
Speaking in Victoria, Clark says she found out about the plot early yesterday.
CKNW's Shane Woodford went to the Surrey basement suite where the two suspects had been living.
Sharlene lives just across the street and desribes her neighbours....
"I reported him once. He was wandering up and down the street in the middle of the night, like two o' clock in the morning, yelling into his cell phone about blowing things up and.....talking about Canadian Forces and Islam right now and if this person on the phone didn't give him the answers he wanted he was prepared to do whatever he had to do to get to the afterlife."
The people who rented the couple the suite say they have heard blaring religious propaganda coming from it.
They also say the entire neighborhood was evacuated about three weeks ago, when some dangerous materials were found in a moving van in the alley just behind the basement suite.
A man by the same name of John Stewart Nuttall, has a criminal past.
In one case, he was handed an 18 month sentence for hitting a man on the head with a rock and then stealing his briefcase in Victoria.
He served that sentence in the community.
Nuttall's criminal record also includes assault, kidnapping and robbery convictions.
His lawyer at the time said his client was drug addicted when committing those crimes.
A page on the music website Reverbnation shows a picture of what appears to be Nuttall and a play list of songs attributed to him.
The songs have are titled: In the End, The News, The End of the World and In League with Satan.
