Concerns over BC Ferries switch to cable system for Denman Island route

The NDP’s Ferry Critic says the Government needs to prove a cable ferry system is safe before moving forward.

This after an announcement Friday the run between Buckley Bay and Denman Island will be switched to the system starting in 2014.

Gary Coons says communities have to be properly consulted.

He says telling a community what will happen is not the way to go forward.

A public information session is being held on Denman Island next Thursday.

"I think that the Liberals, the Minister need to go to Denman Island and be there on November 29th to ensure there's proper consultation."

BC Ferries President, Mike Corrigan says they'll make sure proper protocols are in place so the ship's captain is aware of any traffic.

He also says the ship can be stopped on the cable at any time.

Meanwhile, the President of the Denman Island Residents Association says the announcement was not unexpected.

But Frank Frketich says it is disappointing.

"We’re worried that it's a one little ferry route that's going to be different than all the rest in the BC Ferries’ system, and if something goes wrong, there's going to be no backup to this system that keep us tied to Mainland Vancouver island."

BC Ferries has said in the past there are eleven cable ferries operating in the Province.
