The President of the Council of Senior Citizens Organizations of BC says the government's announcement prices of generic drugs will go down over the next couple of years will really help seniors.

But Art Kube says brand-name drugs are the big drivers of drug costs across the country, with costs going up each year.

He points out that in most cases, those brand-name drugs are what doctors prescribe.

"I think that the ministers of health should get together and basically decide to reduce the protection, protection under patent laws down to a more reasonable period of time than what they are right now."

When the drugs no longer have patent protection, they go into the generic category.

Generic drugs are now cost 35 percent of the price of brand name drugs.  In April that will drop to 25 percent, and to 20 the following year.
