A warning from a film industry insider on the state of movie making in BC

A key player in BC’s film industry says the biggest grossing movie at the world wide box office won't help the Province compete with other regions offering bigger tax incentives.

"I'm sure if Twilight was made again today, there's a very good chance it wouldn't have come to British Columbia,” says Pete Mitchell, a former BC Film Commissioner who heads up Vancouver Film Studios.

And he says this province has become “a bit complacent” over the last three years.

"There's no real focus on the industry here right now and people in Ontario, Quebec, London, southern US, Australia are doing very well off what used to be our business."

He says the upcoming loss of the HST will also hurt the industry because the return of the PST will see overall taxes rise an additional seven per cent.

Mitchell was speaking on CKNW’s world today weekend.
