Auditor General back in court over BC Rail documents

Final arguments are being heard in an attempt by BC's Auditor General to find out why taxpayers had to pick up six million dollars in legal fees for Dave Basi and Bobby Virk.

Auditor General John Doyle is seeking a court order for access to documents from Basi, Virk, and another lawyer currently protected by solicitor client privilege.

The province has already provided Doyle with records into the payout into the two government aides who pleaded guilty in the BC Rail scandal.

But Doyle says the documents covered under client privilege will shed more light onto why taxpayers were on the hook despite guilty pleas from the two ministerial aides.

A lawyer appointed by the court to examine the merits of the case is arguing the public interest and the authority of the Auditor General do not over ride client privilege.

He also argues a government audit of an individual does not make him the object of the same level of scrutiny.
