A month after making dozens of recommendations aimed at protecting the vulnerable and improving police services, BC's Missing Women Commissioner says he's been assured the work has already started.

"I'm confident that the government will move forward."

But Wally Oppal admits it could take time to make his longtime wish for a regional police force a reality.

"This debate's been going on now in the province for the better part of 20 years. I think it's the right thing to do. That's why we recommended it. Had there been a regional police force that Pickton would have been apprehended earlier and I'm sure that the mayors will take that advice and we'll see what happens."

Oppal says he's already been invited to a forum in Port Moody on January 29th to better explain why a regional police force is needed.
