Street homelessness declines in Vancouver

The City of Vancouver says it's on track to reaching it's goal to end street homelessness by 2015.

Council has received its first "Housing and Homeless Strategy" report card.

It shows street homelessness is down 62 per-cent since 2008.

The last homeless count in 2012 showed 306 people were living on city streets.

The city's goal is to get that number to zero by 2015.

However, with Vancouver's affordability challenges and the dwindling supply of rental units, a city spokesperson says reaching homelessness targets won't be easy.

Council has also heard the average monthly rent in the city is nearly 1100-dollars, with most only able to afford 975 dollars.
