Vancouver police have made an arrest in a murder case dating back seven years.

Jaswant Singh Gill is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, 33 year old Gurpreet Gill.

Gill was reported missing by her family in India in 2006.

She was a bride in an arranged marriage who had been living in the Vancouver-area.

Sergeant Kevin McLaren says Gill was considered missing up until two weeks ago.

"Basically it was a long investigation the missing persons unit worked very hard on it for some time until it became apparent that Gurpreet had met with foul play."

Investigators say there were very few clues in the beginning but they never gave up.

Meanwhile Vancouver's deputy police chief says the city's murder rate is at it's lowest level since the 1950's.

Adam Palmer says in 2012 there were just nine murders.

He says in more than half of the murders last year charges have been laid and more are expected.

Palmer says in 2011 Vancouver saw 15 murders and had a 73% solve rate.

"The message I want to impress upon you today is that we don't wait for murders to be committed we search for the killers before they pull the trigger take the gun out of the hands and put them in jail where they can do no harm we do this proactively."

Palmer says he can't predict what the murder rate will be for this year but he says he "promises" to make the safety of citizens his top priority.
