Government promises scaled down wood centre for Prince George

Another announcement today by the BC government that it will build a wood development innovation centre in Prince George, some four years after it was first promised, and a scaled down version to boot.

The contract for the 25 million dollar project goes to P-C-L Constructors, and the government insists construction will begin this year with completion in 2014.

The project has been scaled back from the initial plan for a ten storey, 70 million dollar structure, but the government says it will still be the tallest "contemporary" wood structure in North America.

Controversy has dogged the project since two Prince George businessmen who failed to make the short list claimed they'd been shafted by the government.

Jobs minister Pat Bell has denied trying to influence the bidding process or making any promises to the two men.
