The man who evaded capture for the murder of a Vancouver teenager in 1999 is now the focus of a two-day sentence hearing in BC Supreme Court.

Ninderjit Singh --who has pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of Poonam Randhawa-- is automatically sentenced to life in prison, but the judge has discretion on parole eligibility.

The minimum is ten years.

The Crown is seeking incarceration for at least 17 years before Singh can apply for any freedom.

The victim's estranged and abusive boyfriend shot her at close range in the head two days after her 18th birthday.

Police quickly identified her killer, but Singh fled to the US and was not captured until 2011.
