The Ministry of Finance says with just days to go before the PST makes a return just over half of B.C. businesses have registered.

The Finance ministry says out of an estimated 130,000 businesses needing to get registered by April 1st about 74-thousand or so have done so.

Small Business Minister Naomi Yamamoto says says the government has done its bit to make people aware.

"There actually has been advertising. I don't know all the media that have had the ads on there but there have been online and print advertising done to direct the attention to businesses and letting them know they have to register for the PST."

When asked what happens if businesses aren't registered by Monday Yamamoto says the province won't be launching an audit next week but "There is no provision within the legislation to be lenient towards businesses that don't register or fail to collect the tax properly."

Yamamoto says employers may not be rushing to register due to the costs of making the switch.

"Yeah I think it is fair to say that most businesses are unhappy, not happy, about returning to the PST you know it is just a reality of doing business things change."

She says Ministry of Finance staff will be making calls through the long weekend to get businesses on board.

They will also be standing by to take calls at 1.877.388.4440
