The man who was convicted of mowing down an 83-year-old at a Surrey bus stop wants a new trial.

Gurjit Dhillon was found guilty last fall of dangerous driving causing the death.

Pritnam Benning had been waiting for a bus in 2009 when he was hit by Dhillon's speeding corvette.

The senior died in hospital five days later.

Dhillon was sentenced just this week to one year in jail and two years probation,  a sentence the victim's family doesn't think is enough.

Dhillon has now filed notice with the BC Court of Appeal in the hopes of overturning his conviction.
