The annual Vaisakhi parade was held on Main Street today to mark an important day in the Sikh religion.

An East Vancouver neighbourhood was turned into a huge block party this afternoon, with decorations, food kiosks, Indian music and thousands of people.

Inderjit Kaur says Vaisakhi is the day the Sikh religion was born.

The day is significant for Sikhs and Kaur says it is important for her to bring her children to the event.

"So they know their culture too, even though they are born here. I still want them to be in touch with my Indian culture where I grew up and where I was born"

A Surrey Vaisakhi parade will be held next Saturday.
