After the closing of Kits Coast Guard base Ottawa has activated a new Inshore Rescue Boat, based in Stanley Park.

A shipping advisory sent out by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans informs mariners the new Coast Guard IRB station became active on Monday.

The station will be manned by three Coast Guard crewmen who will use a 'fast rescue craft' to respond to marine emergencies.

Later on, the Coast Guard staff will be reduced to one and two students will be rotated in to man the station at the HMCS Discovery base in Coal Harbour.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says the base will operate 24 hours a day seven days a week.

What that means is three people will work eight hours on and 16 off but will be on call, with a planned 30 minutes or less response time.

The IRB station will run from April 15th to September 3rd every year.

The Feds closed the Kitsilano Coast Guard station in February.
