British Columbians, anxious to learn why taxpayers paid six million dollars worth of legal fees for convicted criminals Dave Basi and Bob Virk, won't find out before a new government is elected next month.

Auditor General John Doyle promised to deliver his findings before he leaves for a new job in Australia.

But even if his long-awaited review is ready before May 14th, we can't tell you what's in it.

Staff with his office say no government reports can be released during an election period.

Doyle's attempts to access certain documents subject to lawyer-client privilege failed when a BC Supreme Court judge dismissed his application in January.

Virk and Basi were ministerial aides under former Premier Gordon Campbell, who pleaded guilty to corruption charges linked to the 2003 sale of BC Rail.

Since 1999, the government has waived legal fees for 95 people, but most involved staff cleared of any wrong-doing.
