Police are now releasing details about the arrests of two people accused of plotting to attack a VIA rail passenger train travelling from Toronto to New York.
The men were taken into custody this morning in Toronto and Montreal.
RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia says the investigation code-named 'project smooth' started last August.
"The RCMP is alleging that Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser were conspiring to carry out an Al-Qaida-supported attack against a Via passenger train. Had this plot been carried out, it would have resulted in innocent people being killed or seriously injured."
The two men are facing charges.
Malizia says the plot had links to Al Qaeda.
He says this threat was swiftly intercepted by police, but he's asking Canadians to remain vigilant.
