NDP's Dix defends possible BC Place sale

The man who could be BC's next Premier was on the hot seat this morning on the Bill Good Show.

Adrian Dix was asked if privatizing BC Ferries was a bad idea.

The NDP leader avoided a direct answer by citing his plan to launch a review.

"And in the meantime, freeze ferry fares,  the proposed increase next year, April 1, 2014 to address that problem."

Bill Good: "But you know, if you freeze fares, you're just going to have to raise them by even more."

Dix: "I think what has happened at BC Ferries is that we've reached a bit of a tipping point."

As for his flip-flop on the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion, Dix says the energy giant has dramatically changed its proposal.

Last October Dix said he woudn't take a position on the expansion until there's a formal application.

Dix defended his proposal to possibly sell BC Place and the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre.

After roasting the government for the planned sale of assets to balance the budget, Dix says the possible sale of BC Place is entirely different.

" Trying to sell assets, for the sake of selling assets to try and fix a budget problem in one year, doesn't make sense. So what I have said about BC Place is, if it's the best option to sell, we haven't booked any of that, we're not spending any of that, it would only go to pay for the debt, the BC Pavilion Corporation, which is a crown corporation that owns BC Place..so it'sentirely different."

Dix says the Liberals are "pretending" to balance the budget by using anticipated revenues from the sale of assets.

He says his proposal is about the government "doing its business."
