The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada says the true extent of damage caused by the April birth control pill recall may never be known and highlights that changes are needed.

CEO Doctor Jennifer Blake says she and the College of Family Physicians are waiting to hear back from the Feds on recommendations to prevents such a debacle from happening again.

Blake says many people on Alysena, the target of the recall, didn't even know they were on the drug because their Doctor had, in fact, prescribed  the brand name, Alesse.

"Pharmacists often times can make those substitutions without telling you they've made those substitutions. So women would have gone in with a prescription for one thing and been given something else and not even realized."

Blake says they want generics disclosed and not able to sound like or look like brand name drugs and that future recalls must be done immediately, not 6 days later as was the case in this situation.
