Transit Police say they've arrested a 36-year-old man after he allegedly threatened a SkyTrain passenger with a knife.

Police say late Thursday night -- a 24-year-old man and his girlfriend were coming from downtown Vancouver when they were approached by another male passenger who allegedly began verbally harassing them.

"He just came out of no where, it appears to have been completely random within a very short period of time, with the knife out of his backpack and began holding it and pointing it within a foot of the man's face," says Anne Drennan with Transit Police.

Drennan says another passenger hit the silent emergency alarm strip in the train.  Norman Wayne Hall was arrested by Transit Police at Broadway Station.

Police searched Hall's backpack and say they found open liquor and some marijuana.

The knife used in the alleged threat was found in a nearby garbage can.

Hall has been charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of a controlled substance.

He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court Monday morning.
