Closing arguments begin at Queen of the North trial

Closing arguments at the trial of a former BC Ferry worker accused of criminal negligence causing death began with Karl Lilgert's lawyer claiming his client is only guilty of making honest mistakes.

Glen Orris says this case should never have come to trial because the former navigation officer at the helm of the Queen of the North is not a criminal.

He says Lilgert has admitted to being in charge of the ship which ran aground and sank in 2006 and he will wear that for the rest of his life, but he is not responsible for the deaths of passengers Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette.

One of the jurors seems to be nodding his head in agreement as Orris blames BC Ferries for equipment problems encountered that night and dismisses prosecution claims Lilgert was distracted by his former lover and co-worker, Karen Briker.

He's asking the jury to find him not guilty and please let him get on with his life.
