A senior RCMP officer is off the job after being charged with theft. He also happens to be accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a witness in the Surrey Six murder.

B.C. Criminal Justice Branch says Sgt. Derek Brassington has been charged with theft under $5,000, stemming from an off-duty incident in Burnaby on March 30.

No details on what's believed to have happened.

For their part, the RCMP say they're aware of the charge, and that Brassington quit this morning.

A statement says they were trying to fire him, but a voluntary dismissal will save time, money and "uncertainty."

They say they've stopped their internal review into his actions because he's now off the force.

No more details have been provided, such as whether the alleged theft is linked to the Surrey Six case.

Brassington and three others already face breach of trust, obstruction and fraud charges in connection to their work on that file.
