The first day of closing arguments at the trial linked to the Queen of the North sinking in 2006 has ended with Karl Lilgert's lawyer admitting his client may be responsible, but any mistakes he made do not prove he's a criminal.
Glen Orris says the evidence shows his client did his job the best he could and the Crown has no proof of criminal negligence causing the deaths of two passengers.
Orris tried to cast doubts on whether Shirley Rosette and Gerald Foisy actually died because their bodies were never found.
He also quoted a country song lyric 'unless you've never made a mistake in your life, beware of the stones you throw. '
Orris ended nearly four hours of submissions telling the jury his client's fate is now in their hands and they should find him NOT guilty.
The Crown's closing arguments are set to begin at 9am.
