Getting transit fare cheats to pay their fines is still proving a problem for Translink.

Between September 2012 and the end of January 2013 (six months), nearly 14,000 violation tickets were written by transit police and security.

Of that number, only 2,600 have been paid, or about 19 per cent.

That's brought in $460,000 in revenue.

Collection agencies were able to pull in another $682,000 in unpaid fines.

That leaves roughly 50 per cent of all tickets written during that time frame being appealed, disputed or moving through the courts.
