An independent candidate in Abbotsford West says his city is not getting the money it needs to deal with mental health issues.
Moe Gill says the province needs to invest serious money in prevention now, in order to save more later.
Gill says people dealing with mental health issues are landing in emergency rooms, prisons or using up hospital resources.
"They are not getting the help they need. They are getting shortchanged all over because the funding that is provided to the mental health sector of it is way down. Abbotsford recieves one third less funding for mental health than Coastal Health so therefore you already have your reduction right there."
Gill wants to set up a separate agency dedicated to delivering mental health services.
