Police officers from BC have received an award of appreciation from law enforcement officials in Guatemala, Central American country considered the most violent in the world.
The award was presented to the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit in Surrey today by the Attorney General of Guatemala.
Speaking through a Spanish translator, Dr. Claudia Paz y Paz praised gang force members for training police in her country and helping them capture nine members of the gang responsible for last year's murder of prosecutor Allan Stowlinsky.
She also says the CFSEU training supported the intervention of up to 500 kidnappings.
The experience was also eye-opening for Acting Inspector Peter Jadis who says we take our safety for granted here.
On average, 15 murders are committed in Guatemala City every night.
