BC Coroner's Service: Stay away from high streams and rivers

The Victoria Day long weekend is upon us, and if you're going to be near streams or rivers, be careful.

The BC Coroners' service says they're running much faster and higher than normal right now.

They say there have already been 3 deaths this spring: a young woman fell into swift current creek near Valemount, and two young men were swept away at Golden Ears Provincial Park.

The body of one of the men was recovered Wednesday --  his friend was taken out of the river five days before.

The Coroners' Service warns that just six inches of water can sweep a person downstream if it is running quickly.  They add that although a bank of a fast running creek might look stable, it can often be eroded, and can collapse with someone standing on it.

The Coroners Service says there were 397 accidental drowning deaths in BC between 2008 and 2012.
