A tragic accident on the Stanley Park Causeway has killed a female cyclist.
Vancouver Police say the woman was riding southbound on the sidewalk when she fell onto the road.
The victim was killed instantly after being hit by a West Vancouver Transit bus traveling in the same direction.
Brian Montague with the Vancouver Police Department says they have spoken with witnesses and the bus driver.
He believes a collision on the sidewalk sent her onto the road.
“The cyclist struck one of the pedestrians on the sidewalk. We don’t know how hard they struck or whether she just grazed, but it was enough, we believe to cause her to fall into traffic onto the roadway.”
Montague says they plan to review video footage to see exactly what happened leading up to the accident.
He is asking anyone who was on the bus, who did not speak to police on scene, to contact the Vancouver Police Collision Investigation Unit at 604 717 3012.
The Lions Gate Bridge is closed in both directions.
It will re-open early Sunday morning.
This is Vancouver's first cyclist death of the year.
