A lot of motorcycles will be hitting the streets in metro Vancouver this morning.

Members of the public will be riding alongside members of the Vancouver Police Department, fire and ambulance services as part of the Westcoast Motorcycle Ride to Live.

The event is held to raise money for prostate cancer research and education in BC.

VPD Traffic Sergeant, Peter Groenland, was diagnosed with the disease in 2008.

He says the ride began in 2010.

"Our biggest ride was 1800 motorcycles and we average probably around 1000 motorcycles per year."

The event kicks off at a motorcycle shop on Boundary Road in Vancouver at 9:00 a.m.

The riders will go through Vancouver and Burnaby to Port Moody.

There will also be a start line in Chilliwack.

A final celebration will be held at Fraser Downs Racetrack in Cloverdale.
