The first Vice President of the Surrey Minor Hockey Association thinks it's a mistake to ban bodychecking in peewee hockey.
Brad Ricketts says bodychecking should be allowed, but there should be more education.
He says that education should start as early as 4-years-old.
"They're not the best skaters and they're bumping into one another anyway. They should be taught how to bump into one another, and they should be taught the correct way to bodycheck and the reasons behind it."
Ricketts adds that kids in the pee wee division will now first experience body checking at the bantam rep level.
He says unless they're given a good education, he's afraid the injury rate for first year bantam rep players will skyrocket.
Hockey Canada voted today to ban bodychecking at the peewee-level across the country.
