The man now serving life in prison for killing a Vancouver man over an expensive engagement ring is trying to have his conviction overturned.

In February, Michael Newman was found guilty of first degree murder in the January 2004 death of Mark Rozen.

The crime carries a mandatory sentence of life with no chance of parole for 25 years.

The 38 year old victim was shot four times and suffered more than 60 stab wounds.

His killer was a member of the UN gang who went to Rozen's West End apartment under the guise of buying the ring worth as much as $18,000.

It could be several months before the BC Court of Appeal hears Newman's reasons for seeking a new trial.
