The search for a cougar in Coquitlam is over but the B-C Conservation Officer Service says the concern for public safety continues.
Inspector Chris Doyle says officers shot the animal around eight this morning after it climbed up into a tree.
It had been prowing around Coquitlam River Park, and yesterday the city closed that park.
He says this was the only option as the animal was a clear danger to people and pets.
Doyle adds, "In this case there was some indications of aggression and actual interest in people so the concern was that this animal was potentially looking a humans as a source of food."
Doyle says until officers can confirm there are no other cougars in the area with similar behaviours people should keep kids and pets indoors and avoid the Coquitlam River Park and trails.
