The city manager for Abbotsford is offering up an apology after the city served up a stinker.

George Murray in a statement took full responsibility for “the manner in which we dealt with this incident,” after city work crews spread chicken manure over the site of a homeless camp.

He says the city will now remove the manure from the site.

He adds city staff will work with stakeholders to find a solution to homelessness.

A homeless advocate in Abbotsford is not buying the apology the city has offered up after manure mess.

James Breckenridge says city work crews showed up day after day looking to do away with a homeless camp.

"So on the sixth day they showed up and spread, bylaw the police were there, spread chicken manure so that people couldn't camp there."

Breckenridge says the silence from Mayor of Abbotsford and city staff has been deafening.

"I believe the mayor has told any city employee who wants to keep their job that, I just saw an email that said the city has told anybody that wants to keep their job not to say a word about it."

City of Abbotsford staff told CKNW neither city manager George Murray or Mayor Bruce Banman were available for comment today.

Below is the statement in full from Abbotsford city manager George Murray.

As City Manager, I take this situation very seriously and retain full responsibility for the manner in which we dealt with this incident. I am deeply sorry for our actions.

The City will be removing the manure from the site and working closely with our community partners and the people impacted over the next few days to collectively resolve this issue.

George Murray, City Manager
