A controversial new policy to charge seniors at longterm care homes maintenance fees for wheelchairs isn't just in effect in the Fraser Health region.
Gavin Wilson with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority confirms it's province-wide.
"We are just doing it now to bring ourselves into line with the practise that was found across the province. It's all one system as far as the public is concerned and yet, there's a differential in who pays wheelchair fees and who doesn't, so we're just trying to make that more consistent and more fair across the board for everyone."
The policy, set to take effect September 1st, falls in line with provincial guidelines implemented last October.
Wilson says seniors who don't want to pay the fees can still purchase or rent wheelchairs from outside vendors.
