Brian Whitlock -- the Vancouver man who beat his dog with a baseball bat and left the German Shepherd for dead in a dumpster -- will spend the next seven days in jail.

He's been sentenced to 60 days, but he's already spent 53 days in custody.

The 26-year old is also banned from owning any animals for the rest of his life - something the SPCA's Marcie Moriarty has reluctantly accepted.

"We are disappointed with the 60 days obviously.  I think that the Crown's recommendation of six months did take into account the mental health aspects of this case. Obviously, we're not very pleased with 60 days. I think the lifetime ban is important."

Whitlock must also serve three years probation and seek therapy for his mental health issues, as well as abstain from alcohol and non-prescribed drugs.

When Provincial Court Judge David St. Pierre sentenced whitlock, there were gasps and tears from animal lovers who filled the gallery prompting him to reprimand them for disrupting proceedings.
