A homeless man is lucky to escape burns after a fire in Abbotsford last night.
Fire Officials responded to a call just behind the Canadian Tire on South Fraser Way at about 9:00.
Fire Chief Dave Rivett says they saw a homeless man by the fire.
"What had happened was there was a fire in a mattress and a lean-to where he was living."
Rivett says the store manager acted quickly and used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire out and rescue the victim.
He says the man is lucky because once a mattress catches fire, it releases a lot of toxic smoke, and it does not take long for a person to succumb to it.
Rivett says the man is in good condition and escaped burns and smoke inhalation.
