Barbeque season is finally here and BC's top doctor says with that comes a new wave of illness.

Dr. Perry Kendall says the good news is that, unlike many seasonal illnesses, this one common to this time of year is 100% preventable.

“This is the time when you do see upticks in food poisoning.  That's why it's really important to observe food safety in the kitchen and cook things thoroughly.”

Dr. Kendall says when it comes cooking on the barbeque, people unintentionally compromise food safety.

He says things like not washing cutting boards, getting raw chicken juices onto salads, and not cooking hamburger meat thoroughly are the most common mistakes.
